Martha C. CottrellMartha Clayton Cottrell M.D. 

Martha Clayton Cottrell is a Licensed Physician, nationally recognized author, mother, activist, pioneer in holistic medicine, and proponent and counselor of Macrobiotics. Dr. Cottrell retired from private practice in New York City specializing in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.  She was Staff Physician at the Student Health Services at Stonybrook University in Long Island, NY.,  Staff Physician at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA., Developer and Director of Athens Model Neighborhood Health Center, Athens, GA., before becoming the Director of Student Health at the Fashion Institute of Technology, a part of the State University of New York for twenty years.   

Dr. Cottrell received her boards in Family Medicine in 1969 after graduating from Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania.  Her undergraduate work was at Mercer University, Macon, Georgia where she graduated Cum Laude. During medical school she did research in cholesterol metabolism with David Kritchevsky, Ph.D. at Wistar Institute.  In 1981 – 1982 she was a fellow in Preventive Medicine and Community Medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Martha (Maggie) has frequently lectured both in this country and abroad on the need to emphasize prevention and health promotion, integrating the methodology of both eastern and western approaches.  From 1985 – 1987 Dr. Cottrell was the clinical coordinator and medical consultant for the AIDS research project in conjunction with Boston University School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology, and the Kushi Foundation of Boston, studying the effects of Macrobiotics as alternative therapy for AIDS.  In June of 1986 the AIDS pilot study was presented at the first International Conference on AIDS in Paris.  The study was in collaboration with Michio Kushi, leading authority on the Macrobiotic approach to health; John Baldekas, Ph.D., Robert Lerman, M.D., and Elinor Levy, Ph.D, of Boston University School of Medicine; Lawrence Kushi, D.Sc., Harvard School of Public Health. 

In 1987, Dr. Cottrell presented her work with Michio Kushi again before medical doctors in France, and at a conference upon invitation, from the government of the Republic of Congo, Africa.  In May 1988, she also traveled to Japan to present this work.  Dr. Cottrell is co-author with Michio Kushi on the book,  AIDS, Macrobiotics and Natural Immunity with Mark Mead; published by Japan Publications and distributed by Harper & Row. She also contributed to the book, Doctors Look at Macrobiotics, which includes ten physicians‘ views on macrobiotics. In 2009, Dr. Cottrell conducted a highly successful week-long project at the Kushi Institute where data revealed the effectiveness of the macrobiotic approach on the reversal of Type 2 Diabetes.

Presently, Dr. Cottrell lives in Asheville, NC and is currently Licensed in New York State.  Her knowledge and commitment to world health and peace, characterize a woman of courage and strength who lives her life with hope, passion, positiveness, and great humor.

She continues to write, teach and counsel in the area of Health Promotion of Mind, Body, and Spirit.

Lino StanchichLINO STANCHICH, L.N., L.M.B.T.

Lino Stanchich is a Licensed Nutritionist, Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist, author, and Kushi Institute Certified Educator, with over 40 years experience. He is a renowned expert in the health benefits of whole foods and a respected international teacher of the macrobiotic diet, philosophy, and lifestyle, along with energy exercises (Chi Kung), shiatsu massage, Do-In self-massage, and Conscious Eating Techniques. 

Mr. Stanchich is a multi-lingual international teacher of natural health and conducts lectures, seminars, and conferences annually in Europe. Lino was resident counselor at the award-winning SHA Wellness Center, in Spain, and is an annual teacher on the Holistic Holiday at Sea Cruise. In addition, he has established several natural health learning centers throughout the United States. Lino has lectured at many major health centers throughout the world, as well as to universities, hospitals, medical schools, spas, corporations, and the United Nations Macrobiotic Organization. 

Author of the popular books, Power Eating Program, You Are How You EatMacrobiotic Healing Secrets, and The Natural Kidney and Bladder Control ProgramEssential Recipes for Health, and Laughter for Health and Happiness, Mr. Stanchich has created the "Healing Mealtime Music" audio, and the dynamic self-massage and exercise video "Energize Yourself,” as well as the laughter therapy audio, “Laugh for the Health of It!” In conjunction with Sean DiMaria, he has produced the popular audio, “ Using Your Mind to Heal Your Body,” to assist people in creating positive and dynamic mental affirmations for meditation while eating. Lino has appeared on a wide variety of international radio and television shows.

Jane Stanchich


Jane Stanchich, Licensed Nutritionist, well known counselor, author, and plant-based chef, is an international teacher of natural health principles with over twenty-nine years experience. Ms. Stanchich has served on the faculty of the Kushi Institute and several other preeminent natural health institutes, where this former public school teacher created and implemented dynamic educational courses in whole foods cooking, natural health, disease prevention, and ecological living. 

Along with her husband, Lino Stanchich, nutritionist, counselor and author, Jane presents dynamic seminars and retreats, focusing on the optimum diet and lifestyle for personal and planetary health and peace. They teach in their hometown of Asheville, NC and throughout the United States and Europe where the couple were resident nutritional instructors at the award-winning SHA Wellness Center in Alicante, Spain. Jane is a frequent presenter of wellness lectures on the Holistic Holiday at Sea Cruise.

Ms. Stanchich contributes to numerous international publications, including Asheville’s “New Life Journal” and  “Organic Shopper.” She has been a  regular contributor to the national magazine, “Christina’s Healthy Living Journal,” founded by Christina Pirello, of the Emmy Award-Winning PBS Television Cooking Show, “Christina Cooks!”

Jane also conducted the plant-based nutritional macrobiotic menu program for the Kellogg School of Public Health’s dining facility at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  Jane has produced a cooking video and DVD entitled, “Macrobiotic Cooking for the Whole Family and book, Healthy Holiday Cooking: Delicious Macrobiotic Recipes for Autumn and Winter Celebrations and DVD, “Cooking Terrific Tofu Turkey.”

Frank Rath


The son of a career Army Officer, Frank’s upbringing provided many opportunities to travel and experience different cultures around the world. After graduating from Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt Germany, he attended North Carolina State University for one year before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh where he graduated with a BS degree in Physical Therapy in 1991. Frank completed his post-professional Master of Health Sciences degree in Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine in 2001 where he worked as an Assistant Professor for two and a half years in the Masters Entry level Physical Therapy program. In 1997 he became a Board Certified Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy and achieved Certification in Manual Therapy from The University of St. Augustine Institute of Physical Therapy.

Frank has practiced Physical Therapy in Colorado, Pennsylvania, Florida and Maryland. He has served in his current role since 2007 as the Manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation for the University of Maryland Shore Regional Health where he is responsible for the oversight of six facilities spread across four counties. He has lived in rural Queen Anne’s County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore since 2002. An avid runner and veteran of eighteen marathons, Frank maintains his fitness to keep pace with his wife and three active children.

Monika Armbruster

Monika Armbruster, L. Ac.

Monika Armbruster is a licensed acupuncturist who has been practicing on the Eastern Shore since 1997. She graduated with a B.A. from the University of Maryland and then furthered her studies at the Traditional Acupuncture Institute where she received a master's degree in traditional acupuncture. Monkia's passion is to help individuals in developing their potential for physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing to the greatest extent possible.


Paulette Paulette Florio, LMT, E-RYT-200, VAYT, YACEP

Paulette Florio has studied yoga for more than 50 years and has taught yoga for over 30 years. She co-owns THE STUDIO ( in St. Michaels, MD, a yoga studio that offers mat and aerial yoga, dance and T’ai Chi. Her yoga classes are a blend of her yoga experience (Sivananda, Integral, Iyengar, Tri Yoga, Anusara, Ashtanga). She is also a massage therapist specializing in Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (NMT) for pain relief and injury recovery. 

In her yoga classes she focuses on proper alignment, cultivating the breath and making yoga available to all populations regardless of age or physical condition through the use of yoga props which safely allow students to achieve yoga poses and their benefits. She teaches all levels of mat and aerial yoga and specializes in Yoga for Scoliosis, Back Care and Yoga for Cancer (Y4C). She strives to maintain balance in her life and health by practicing and teaching yoga, enjoying a nutritional plant-based diet and when not working she enjoys dancing Salsa and Argentine Tango and playing the ukulele.


Esella Thompson, B.F.A, LMBT NC #14071

Esella Thompson
studied massage and graduated as a Certified Massage and Bodywork Therapist from the Center For Massage and Natural Health in Asheville, NC. She feels that being a massage therapist is very rewarding because massage not only helps the receiver with natural healing and relaxation, it becomes an opportunity for her to rise above her own needs and self to find peace and renewal. As a Massage Therapist, Esella promotes relaxation and wellness of body, mind, and spirit by releasing and moving Qi/Energy through Massage, Reflexology, Shiatsu and Dance! 

In addition to being a Licensed Massage Therapist, Esella is also a graduate of Kushi Institutes Macrobiotic Leadership Program. She has studied all areas of Macrobiotics for six years. Her mentors are Martha C. Cottrell, MD, and Lino Stanchich. In past lives she received a BFA in Theater Technology from The Goodman Theatre and became a Certified Pharmacy Technician before becoming conscious of healthy alternatives. Her life hobby has been in many forms of dance which has led her to performing, teaching, and dance competitions.
